Description

A fine pair of late Gothic to early Renaissance brass pricket candlesticks, each with wide dished drip-pans and original wrought-iron prickets, above knopped and disc-turned stems, standing on boldly moulded circular bases. The robust and strongly profiled forms reflect the transition from Gothic verticality towards the balanced proportions of the Renaissance.
Nuremberg was the leading centre of brass founding in Northern Europe during the 15th and 16th centuries, supplying ecclesiastical and domestic lighting to churches, guilds, and wealthy households across Germany and the Low Countries. Pairs of this scale and survival are rare, as most were melted down or re-cast in later centuries.

This pair retains a fine golden colour and excellent surface, embodying the high craftsmanship and enduring presence of early German metalwork.
