Description
Superbly carved reliefs in quarter-sawn oak, each set within an early but later moulded frame, the fields worked in high relief with animated narrative scenes contained by dense strapwork and foliate grotesques in the full Northern Renaissance manner.
Left panel: the Resurrection of Christ — Christ, nimbate and holding the vexillum (cross-staff with banner), steps from the tomb while two sleeping/overthrown soldiers lie beneath; the scene is framed by scrolled foliage, masks and fruiting tendrils.
Right panel: an Old Testament hero in combat (very probably Samson; compare the muscular bearded figure and attendant putto) overcoming an adversary; again enclosed by a border of interlaced strapwork, volutes and leafy drops.
The vigorous modelling, crisp drill work to the ornament and the characteristic amalgam of figure subject with scrolling “auricular” and strapwork ornament point to a Netherlandish workshop in the second half of the sixteenth century, likely Antwerp, where such panel sets were supplied for cabinets, choir screens and domestic cupboards.
Condition
Excellent colour and surface; minor age cracks, tiny edge chips commensurate with age. Later frames.
