Description
A pair of large oak panels, finely carved in deep relief with martial figures of Roman soldiers, each depicted in animated stance with shield and sword, set within scrolling strapwork ornament and surmounted by a scallop-shell device. The shell, a Renaissance emblem of rebirth and pilgrimage, adds symbolic resonance to the martial imagery, uniting themes of spiritual and civic virtue.
Executed in the Mannerist taste prevalent in Antwerp workshops of the mid-16th century, the panels display bold undercutting and a vigorous sense of movement, characteristic of Flemish carving at its height. Retained in their period green-painted and gilded frames, they would originally have formed part of a larger decorative scheme—either as architectural enrichment or embellishment to a grand piece of furniture.
