Description
A fine pair of mid-16th century Flemish carved oak panels, each centred with a portrait medallion of a male figure in profile, carved in the manner of classical coinage or medals, evoking the Renaissance fascination with antiquity. The portrait busts are set within elaborate scrolling foliate ornament, with urns, acanthus, and grotesque forms, typical of the Netherlandish Renaissance vocabulary that drew inspiration from Italian engravings.
Panels such as these likely originated from choir stalls, domestic panelling, or a cabinet of humanist display, and would have been intended to project learning, virtue, and lineage. The combination of portraiture with luxuriant vegetal ornament encapsulates the Renaissance ideal of the rebirth of classical knowledge within a Christian framework. Set in sympathetic later green velvet frames.
