Description

A superb late 16th-century salt-glazed stoneware jug, of bulbous form with tapering neck, collared rim, and loop handle, the neck applied with a finely moulded mask of a bearded man (known as a Bellarmine or Bartmann), and the body impressed with a medallion seal of concentric foliate scrolls and rosettes. The rich amber-to-honey glaze, mottled with iron inclusions and kiln-fired variations, displays the tactile depth and warmth characteristic of late Renaissance Rhenish wares.
This example belongs to the classic production of the Raeren and Cologne kilns of the late 16th century, whose wares were exported throughout Northern Europe, England, and the Low Countries. The Bellarmine type—named in satire after Cardinal Roberto Bellarmino, an outspoken critic of Protestantism—became a ubiquitous form of domestic storage and drinking vessel, found in both elite and vernacular contexts from London to Amsterdam.

The applied bearded mask, with its deeply incised features and curled moustache, is typical of the Cologne workshop tradition, while the applied circular medallion, possibly a town or potter’s mark, aligns with Raeren examples illustrated in the Frechen and Raeren archaeological corpus (see H. Siegburg, Rheinische Steinzeug, 1977, figs. 124–130).
