Renaissance Apothecary Jug

A rare Renaissance pharmacy jug of baluster form with strap handle and forward-pointing spout, painted in rich cobalt blue on a white ground. The front is inscribed within a cartouche “SV. D. SVCcO. ACeTOs”, denoting Succo di Acetos (distilled vinegar or vinegar-based medicinal solution), used as both a preservative and curative in Renaissance medicine. The body is further decorated with scrolling foliate ornament and stylised grotesques, reflecting the influence of Chinese blue-and-white porcelain and contemporary maiolica workshops at Faenza and Venice.
Such vessels were essential to Renaissance apothecaries, both secular and monastic, serving to contain and dispense medicinal preparations. Surviving examples with clear inscriptions are especially sought after, providing rare documentary evidence of the pharmacological practices of the period.
Condition: minor surface wear consistent with age; glaze colours well-preserved; no significant losses.
