Description
A rare and substantial Renaissance brass candlestick, the tall tubular socket raised on a knop-turned stem above a pronounced domed base with broad circular drip pan and scalloped edge. The wide base and bold dome are highly unusual features, distinguishing this example from the more standard Gothic candlesticks of Nuremberg type and pointing to the inventive character of early 16th-century Flemish brass founders.
This form belongs to the transitional phase between the late Gothic and Renaissance, when Flemish workshops began to explore more architectural and sculptural bases, replacing the narrow drip pans of the 15th century with bolder, weightier supports. The scalloped rim of the drip pan further emphasises this ornamental shift, setting the piece within the broader decorative language of the early Renaissance in the Low Countries.
