Description
An impressive large Renaissance oak relief panel, finely carved in deep relief with a dramatic martyrdom scene. At the centre stands a crowned female figure holding a palm branch, the symbol of martyrdom, surrounded by Roman soldiers and horsemen in full armour. To the left, attendants bear standards and spears; to the right, a cavalry skirmish unfolds with fallen figures beneath rearing horses.
The panel demonstrates the sophisticated carving techniques of Flemish workshops in the mid-16th century, particularly those active in Antwerp and Malines, where altarpieces and narrative reliefs were produced for both ecclesiastical and civic commissions. The treatment of drapery, musculature, and armour reflects the influence of Italian Renaissance models filtered through Northern Mannerism.
