Description
An exceptional Spanish oak casket clad entirely in decorative wrought iron, the surface arranged in geometric panels with raised bosses and studwork, centred by a large shaped lockplate with original hasp. The fitted interior retains two rare layers of early papers: a marbled lining of the late 16th/early 17th century and an overlaid black-printed floral paper, almost certainly Italian or Spanish, covering the secret compartment built into the lid. These boxes served as personal strongboxes for money, jewels, or documents, the iron studwork both reinforcing security and symbolising eternity and protection. The survival of its original papers and concealed compartment places this among the rarer and more complete Renaissance examples.
