Description
A shallow relief figure of Saint Peter, carved to stand against an architectural support. Peter is shown bearded and mantle-clad, his proper left hand gripping an overscaled key—his canonical attribute as gatekeeper of heaven—held diagonally across the torso for legibility. The drapery falls in tight, pipe-like late Gothic folds, with the mantle sweeping over the left shoulder and across the chest. The figure terminates in an integral console-like base, further indicating its original placement within a retable (altarpiece) ensemble, choir screen, or shrine niche.
Traces of original polychromy and water-gilding survive—gilded edging to the mantle and warm brown glazes—showing honest devotional wear, small losses, age cracks, and the usual worming of old oak. The flat reverse confirms architectural use, a hallmark of Flemish workshop practice in the Low Countries around 1500 (Mechelen/Brussels circle), where saints flanked central Christological scenes.
