Description

Cast copper-alloy (“bronze/latten”) chamberstick of petite scale, the shallow saucer with raised boss and integral flat handle terminating in a notched/trefid finial. Turned baluster stem rises to a banded cylindrical socket with slight everted lip; the stem is pegged through the boss (now with honest wear and a deep, natural verde patina).

This compact, travel-worthy form—with a broad drip pan, short baluster stem, and simple flat handle—is characteristic of Northern European workshop practice in the later 16th century. The crisp, cast handle plate and the restrained turning of the stem and socket point to the Low Countries (Flemish) or, alternatively, northern German production, rather than English sheet-brass work of the same date. Chambersticks of this early period are notably scarcer than freestanding table sticks and were intended for close, portable use in bedchambers, closets, and strongrooms.
