Description
A finely potted and unusually small English delftware vase of baluster form with a flared lip and narrow footring, painted in iron-red, blue, and green enamels on a white tin-glazed ground. The neck is encircled by a trellis border of interlaced blue and red lines, beneath which free and rhythmic floral sprays emerge from stylised blue cartouches, the whole composition imbued with the lively spontaneity typical of late 17th-century English tin-glazed pottery.
The delicate scale and painterly surface suggest manufacture in one of the London delftware workshops active in Lambeth or Southwark, which by the 1680s had become the dominant centres of English tin-glazed earthenware production. The trellis collar, reserved white grounds, and loose floral motifs reflect the enduring influence of Dutch Delft, yet the slightly translucent glaze and subtle brushwork indicate a distinctly English interpretation of the Anglo-Dutch decorative idiom.
