Description

A finely cast Spanish brass mortar with its original pestle, dating to the 17th century. The cylindrical body is thickly walled and ornamented with a series of bold, triangular lug-like projections around the exterior, a feature characteristic of Iberian foundry production, particularly from Castile and Valencia. The associated pestle is turned with a knop finial and flattened grinding surface, well-suited for both culinary and apothecary use.

Mortars of this robust type were integral objects within both domestic households and professional contexts such as apothecaries and monastic infirmaries. Contemporary Spanish inventories frequently list such pieces as valued assets, reflecting their role not only as utilitarian vessels but also as symbols of wealth and permanence. The bell-metal alloy, rich in copper and zinc, provided the necessary durability for the preparation of medicines, pigments, and spices.
