Description
A small Spanish Gothic casket carved in walnut and richly embellished with traces of its original gilded and polychromed decoration. Rectangular in form, the box is carved on all four sides with a continuous series of pointed lancet arches, evocative of the architectural tracery found in late medieval Spanish ecclesiastical buildings. The recessed fields retain remnants of blue pigment and gilding, creating a striking contrast with the warm patina of the walnut.
The hinged lid opens to a plain interior, while the exterior displays the restrained yet sophisticated craftsmanship characteristic of Iberian woodworking during the closing decades of the fifteenth century. Objects of this type were used for the storage of personal possessions, documents, jewellery, or devotional items, and survive in comparatively small numbers, particularly with traces of their original surface decoration intact.
The casket reflects the enduring influence of Gothic architectural forms in Spanish decorative arts and stands as a compelling example of late medieval domestic craftsmanship.
