Description
An impressive joined oak and elm settle, dated 1694 and initialled R W. The tall back composed of six framed panels, the upper rail boldly carved with upright leaves beneath a cresting frieze of stylised foliage. The central horizontal rail enriched with scrolling tendrils and rosettes, lending the piece a distinctly late Renaissance character which lingered in North Country joinery at the close of the 17th century. The shaped “ears” finely carved with birds, a symbolic motif alluding variously to family identity, the soul, and renewal.
The solid elm seat is supported on an under-frame with multiple turned spindles, while the arms rest on baluster supports with bold scrolling handholds. The use of elm—a favoured timber in the North—contrasts beautifully with the darker oak of the back and frame, a feature typical of high-status regional work.
This settle belongs to a small but important group of late 17th-century North Country settles bearing dates and initials, documentary survivals which provide invaluable insight into ownership and commission. The present example, with its rare avian iconography, strongly carved detail, and excellent state of preservation, is of exceptional quality.
