Description

14th century coat of arms for the Bishop Grandisson of Exeter Cathedral, in the form of a shield with the arms of John de Grandisson being held by a pair of arms. Possibly from a wall decorated scheme either from the Bishop’s palace in Exeter or Exeter Cathedral.

John de Grandisson was Bishop of Exeter, in Devon, from 1327 to his death in 1369. Several works of art associated with him survive in the British Library, the British Museum and the Louvre in Paris. A 14th century choir stall is in Ottery St Mary church with misericords showing the very same coat of arms.
