Description

A finely worked South German brass alms dish, the centre with a bold raised boss of swirling gadroons, enclosed by a continuous Gothic inscription band, the rim decorated with stamped chevrons. Such dishes were widely produced in Nuremberg and exported across Europe, often used both liturgically and domestically as show pieces. The combination of decorative gadroons and sacred text reflects the enduring Gothic tradition within early Renaissance design.

Inscribed brass dishes of this type, known as Inschriftenschüsseln, were especially popular in the 15th and 16th centuries, and are represented in major collections including the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Nuremberg.
