Description
A rare late 16th-century Italian brass pricket candlestick of elegant form, the slender turned stem rising through a wide drip pan to a tall pricket, supported on a stepped triangular base with three ball feet. The central baluster knop provides balance and rhythm to the design, while the architectural base reflects the Renaissance taste for classical geometry and proportion.
Tripod bases are considerably rarer than square or circular examples and carry symbolic resonance in the Renaissance context: the three feet signifying both stability and the Holy Trinity, making such candlesticks particularly suited for ecclesiastical settings. Italian founders were especially attentive to classical revival forms, and this piece reflects their translation of antique tripod vessels into functional liturgical brassware.
