Description

A finely carved group of three Renaissance walnut figures, each representing a saint:
St. Jude, shown holding a staff,
St. Simon, bearing his attribute of a saw,
and Mary Magdalene, carrying the chalice of ointment.
Each figure is framed by scrolling acanthus ornament, characteristic of Netherlandish Mannerist design at the close of the 16th century. Such figures originally formed part of an altarpiece, devotional shrine, or architectural furnishing, where saintly intercession and symbolic attributes reinforced both private and communal devotion.
Carved in walnut, the preferred medium of Renaissance sculptors in the Low Countries, the figures retain excellent modelling of drapery, expressive faces, and fine ornamental detail. Surviving groups of this type are scarce, especially with their iconography so clearly identifiable.

These carvings belong to the Catholic response to the Reformation, circa 1580–1600. They illustrate how Netherlandish workshops combined Renaissance ornament, humanist design prints, and deeply traditional saintly iconography to create portable devotional sculptures for a society negotiating both religious conflict and renewed piety.
