Description
A fine matched pair of late 16th-century brass pricket candlesticks, each with domed circular base raised on ball feet, swelling baluster stems divided by moulded knops, wide drip pans, and tall central prickets for securing large wax candles. The elegant proportions and precise lathe finishing are characteristic of the brass-founding workshops of Nuremberg, the preeminent centre of metalware production in Renaissance Germany.
Pairs of candlesticks of this date are rarely preserved together. Their survival as an intact pair strongly suggests their original use in an ecclesiastical or domestic devotional setting, where symmetry was integral to display and ritual. Nuremberg candlesticks were widely exported and prized for their durability and refined profiles, combining functionality with an architectural sense of rhythm and proportion.
