Description
A rare and well-preserved Spanish Renaissance tooled leather casket, the rectangular form decorated throughout with stamped and incised patterns imitating panelled strapwork and diapered grounds. The surface retains its original tooled decoration, enriched with stylised foliate and geometric motifs typical of late 16th-century Spanish leatherwork. Retaining its original wrought iron lockplate, hasp, carrying handle, and side clasps.
Such leather-covered coffers were luxury items in late Renaissance Spain, used for the safe storage of documents, jewels, or personal valuables. Their distinctive tooled decoration reflects the influence of Mudéjar craft traditions that persisted in Iberian design well into the 16th century, blending Gothic geometries with Renaissance ornament. Comparable examples can be found in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and the Museo Arqueológico Nacional, Madrid.
