Description

A late Gothic brass bowl with a deeply hammered body and wide flared rim, characteristic of late medieval and early Renaissance washing basins used in domestic hall interiors, monastic refectories and ecclesiastical lavabos. The pronounced rim profile, warm high-zinc alloy and surviving planishing marks identify it as a product of the Southern German or Netherlandish brass-working centres active in the late 15th and early 16th centuries.

Used as a washing or lavabo bowl in elite domestic halls, monastic refectories, or at the altar for clerical ablutions.
