Description
Tin-glazed earthenware, painted in cobalt blue with foliate scrolls, winged putti and central cartouches bearing Latin pharmaceutical labels:
O·BASILICUM· (Oleum Basilicum – basil oil, a compound medicinal oil used as a stimulant and external embrocation)
O·SALOMONIS· (Oleum Salomonis – “Solomon’s Oil,” an early-modern compound liniment associated with bone and wound healing)
Each jar of baluster form on a spreading foot, the bodies encircled by a reserved white label band framed by acanthus leaves and scrollwork, the shoulders and lids decorated with pendant garlands and floral sprays. The domed lids retain their original finials and seat correctly on the galleries.
Condition
Minor glaze blemishes and small rim chips consistent with age and use; no structural restoration visible. Excellent surface and strong cobalt colour.
