Description
A rare devotional tile panel composed of twelve tin-glazed earthenware tiles, painted in manganese-purple with the Crucifixion. Christ is shown affixed to a simple wooden cross beneath the titulus INRI, his body rendered with strong Baroque modelling and expressive anatomical tension. Below, a rocky mound and sparse vegetation lead the eye towards a stylised walled city and distant hills, elements derived from Flemish engraved sources widely circulated in Portugal during the later seventeenth century.
Condition
Reassembled from original tiles with visible cracks and glaze losses, but with no significant repainting. Surface stable and displays the warm ivory tone typical of seventeenth-century Portuguese tin glaze.
