Description
A late Stuart period portrait of a small child, shown seated barefoot upon a richly fringed cushion, wearing a white gown trimmed with blue silk ribbon rosettes at the sleeves. The child’s direct gaze, high forehead, and faintly parted lips reflect the manner of provincial English portraiture in the final decades of the seventeenth century, in which likeness and presence were prioritised above courtly embellishment.
The setting combines an interior drapery swag with a distant landscape and clouded sky, a compositional device typical of the period and intended to elevate the sitter’s status while retaining intimacy. The loose flowing gown is consistent with children’s dress before the adoption of gendered clothing in the early eighteenth century, suggesting an age of two to three years.
Condition: Old craquelure throughout, scattered retouching and surface abrasion, but stable and presentable. Later gilt frame.
