Description
A finely carved Renaissance oak panel depicting the Annunciation. The Archangel Gabriel is shown raising his hand in greeting as the Virgin Mary humbly bows in acceptance of the divine message. Above, the Holy Spirit descends in the form of a dove radiating light, underscoring the mystery of the Incarnation. The figures are framed within an elaborate cartouche of scrolling Renaissance ornament, balancing sacred narrative with decorative grandeur.
Panels of this type were produced in the Netherlands and Northern Germany during the late 16th century, often for private devotion or as part of domestic altarpieces. The high relief carving, expressive gestures, and tightly framed composition reflect the enduring importance of Marian devotion at a time of both Catholic renewal and Protestant challenge.
