Description
A Dutch Delft charger, decorated in rich cobalt blue with a striking radiating design of stylised floral and foliate panels around a central bouquet. The surface is divided into lobed reserves, each densely filled with scrolling leaves and tulip-like blossoms, the whole framed by a dark blue rim with a scalloped edge.
This bold, symmetrical pattern is typical of Haarlem workshops such as De Witte Starre, active in the early to mid-18th century, and reflects the Dutch taste for elaborate ornamental schemes influenced by both Near Eastern Iznik wares and contemporary European design.
Chargers of this scale and decorative impact would have been displayed prominently on dressers or within collectors’ cabinets, admired as much for their artistry as for their function.
