Description

Small architectural casket of rectangular form with moulded lid and base, all four sides inset with miniature turned baluster galleries within moulded frames, the whole in well-figured walnut. The lid hinged at the back and secured at the front by an iron strap hasp and staple (key now lacking), the ironwork fixed with rose-headed nails. The interior plain; underside with a single plank bottom; construction throughout in pegged joinery. Rich, dry surface with excellent colour.

Boxes with open baluster arcading—sometimes called coffrets à balustres—belong to a distinct northern European tradition at the crossroads of furniture and miniature architecture. Produced in workshops from Artois/Flanders to the Meuse valley, they were used for valuables, documents, or devotional objects, their pierced sides offering an elegant play of light and shadow reminiscent of choir screens and gallery railings of the period. Continuous galleries to all four sides, as here, are uncommon and denote a higher-status example intended to be viewed in the round on a table or cupboard.
