Description
Tin-glazed earthenware, painted in soft cobalt blue with a lively scene of two huntsmen spearing a boar in a wooded landscape before a turreted house, all within a band of loosely brushed trees under a cloudy sky. The glaze exhibits the characteristic milky tone and subtle pooling typical of late seventeenth-century Bristol ware.
The spontaneous and freely handled decoration reflects the developing pictorial style of English Delft painters around 1680, whose work was influenced by imported Dutch faience landscapes but adapted to a more naïve and narrative English taste. Scenes of hunts and pastoral recreation appear on a handful of Bristol plates and dishes of the period, suggesting production for the gentry household or tavern trade, where such imagery echoed themes of sport and conviviality.
