Description

A robust cast bronze cooking cauldron of bulbous form, raised on three tapering feet with sharply defined junctions, and fitted with a pair of angular loop handles supporting an integral iron swing handle. The thickened everted rim and softly rounded belly display the hammer marks and casting seams typical of 16th-century sand casting. The surface bears an appealing blackened and burnished patina from age and historic hearth use.

This type of cauldron belongs to a well-documented group produced in the southern Low Countries during the late 15th and 16th centuries, where specialised foundries in Dinant, Namur, and Mechelen supplied domestic and ecclesiastical metalwork across northern Europe. Such vessels were cast in one pour using two-part moulds, with handles and feet often formed integrally. The heavy, globular form and short feet distinguish the earlier Renaissance profile, which gradually evolved into taller-sided examples by the early 17th century.
