Description
Rectangular carcase in oak with a moulded, slightly overhanging lid and deep stepped plinth; the sides fitted with original wrought-iron strap-hinges and fishtail mounts, and forged drop-ring carrying handles on shaped backplates. The ironwork is fixed with rose-headed nails, several neatly clenched on the interior. The carcass shows early joinery consistent with Netherlandish practice, with the base housed within the moulded plinth; surface with honest wear and a dry, well-kept patina. Original(but unattached working lock inside box) and later escutcheon (probably 18th/19th century); iron strapwork, hinges, handles and nails appear original. Minor old shrinkage cracks and marks from use; pleasing colour and surface.
