Description
Of baluster form with a gently flared neck and loop handle, painted in cobalt blue on a tin-glazed white ground with a large bird standing amidst stylised rocks, plants, and grasses, within double-line borders. The handle is decorated with rhythmic blue dashes, and the footrim left unglazed showing the buff-coloured body beneath.
This lively piece exemplifies the expressive brushwork and folk charm of late seventeenth-century English delftware. The bold design, painted with rapid free strokes, reflects the taste for oriental-inspired motifs interpreted through a distinctly English decorative sensibility. Such jugs were produced in London and Bristol workshops, whose output between 1660 and 1700 combined domestic functionality with painterly invention.
