Description

Rectangular carcass in oak with a moulded overhanging top and boldly stepped moulded plinth; the single door with an applied lozenge (diamond) panel and original iron butterfly hinges, opening to an arrangement of five drawers (two short over one central long, above two further long drawers). The drawer fronts are of oak with iron ring pulls on simple round nails; drawer linings in softwood, the cabinet constructed throughout with pegged joints. The surface retains a pleasing, dry, early colour and patination.

Small lockable table cabinets of this kind were intended for high-value household commodities—aromatic spices, sweetmeats and sugars—or for documents, keys and coin, and would have been kept on a table, chest or cupboard in a private chamber. The applied lozenge panel, stepped base mouldings and honest vernacular joinery are characteristic of provincial English work of the Restoration period.
