Description

A richly patinated Charles II boarded oak box, the front boldly carved with a continuous band of inverted floral lunettes, a design deeply associated with West Country craftsmanship in the mid-17th century. The carving retains excellent depth and vigour, its rhythm emphasised by punch-decoration within the motifs. Constructed from panels of dense, richly figured red oak, the box is fitted with its original iron lockplate and retains a superb, untouched surface with centuries of natural colour and wax.

Boxes of this type were used to store valuables, documents, or household plate and were often displayed prominently within the home as both functional and decorative objects. The lunette motif, popular in the South-West of England, carried protective connotations of renewal and continuity, making it especially suitable for domestic furnishing.
