Description
A fine Charles II carved oak boarded box, attributed to Exeter, Devon. The front boldly carved with interlaced leafy quatrefoils and scrolling motifs, enriched with punch decoration, the central section retaining its original iron lockplate. The sides plain, the top with a rich, natural patina from age and use.
The quatrefoil and scrolling ornament are characteristic of Exeter joiners of the later 17th century, whose work is noted for its vigorous design and confident carving. These motifs, derived from Renaissance strapwork and stylised foliage, may symbolise harmony and order, appropriate for a household chest intended to safeguard documents or valuables.
