Description
A finely wrought iron domed messenger box, or courier casket, from Renaissance Nuremberg, the foremost European centre of armourers and locksmiths. Of compact, arched form with riveted construction and hinged lid, the casket is secured by a robust lockplate with original key, designed for the safe transport of documents, coin, and valuables. The portable size, reinforced bands, and ingenious lockwork are typical of Nuremberg guild production, where such caskets were highly prized by merchants, bankers, and royal messengers engaged in long-distance trade and administration.
