Description
A charming tin-glazed earthenware covered pot, cylindrical in form with a single loop handle and domed lid with knop. The body is finely decorated in a rich cobalt blue beneath a white tin glaze, the design comprising vertical repeats of stylised floral sprays alternating with oval medallions, all set beneath a scalloped arcade border. The lid is decorated en suite, painted with radiating foliate sprays encircling the central knop.
This decoration shows the strong influence of imported Chinese Kangxi blue and white porcelain, yet interpreted in the distinctively European Delft tradition. The crisp brushwork, symmetry of design and control of the cobalt pigment suggest a Dutch origin, likely from one of the principal factories in Delft.
Such covered pots were versatile domestic vessels, possibly used at table for serving small dishes, custards, or possets. Surviving examples with their original lids are comparatively scarce, as Delftware is prone to fritting and chipping due to its fragile tin glaze.
