Description
A fine Charles II joined oak court cupboard, of unusually clean proportions and retaining an exceptional colour and patina. The upper section is fitted with a single broad drawer, boldly carved with scrolling floral motifs, flanked by applied brackets in the plain robust style of the period. Below, the structure is supported on baluster-turned columns joined by plain stretchers, the simplicity of which enhances the sculptural strength of the carved frieze above.
This type of cupboard occupied a central place in the 17th-century household, serving both as a practical vessel for storage and as a display surface for flagons, silver plate, and imported pottery. The understated design here represents a transitional style of the Restoration period, bridging the earlier decorative exuberance of the Jacobean age with the more refined classical restraint that would dominate later in the century.
The survival of such a piece in such original condition is uncommon, and this cupboard embodies the pared-back elegance, robust joinery, and warm surface quality most prized by today’s collectors.
