Description
A Yorkshire joined oak cradle, dated 1685, of panelled construction with boldly carved S-scrolls enclosing roundels to the sides and a large lozenge motif to the foot panel. The headboard is carved with the date 1685 and a crowned male profile flanked by Tudor roses, expressing royalist loyalty in the wake of the Restoration. The narrow uppermost board above the head panel is a 19th-century replacement, though the cradle otherwise retains its original 17th-century integrity.
Raised on shaped rockers with turned corner finials and a hooded canopy, the cradle combines both functionality and potent symbolism. The crowned head represents monarchy and divine right, while the roses suggest unity and dynastic continuity. The lozenge and lattice motifs, traditionally protective, reinforce the cradle’s role in safeguarding the infant.
