Description

A fine pair of late Renaissance brass pricket candlesticks, each with a broad drip pan above a tall baluster-turned stem, raised on a square plinth with scrolled tripod feet. The elegant vertical emphasis, combined with the lightness of the tripod supports, reflects the refinement of Italian ecclesiastical metalwork of the late 16th and early 17th centuries.

Candlesticks of this form were intended for altars, side chapels, or domestic devotional use, providing both illumination and a focus of symbolic light in Renaissance interiors. The tripod base, in particular, is a distinctly Italian feature, favoured in Venetian and Florentine workshops, contrasting with the heavier domed or hexagonal bases produced in Northern Europe at the same time.
