Description

Of robust rectangular form with a single-piece seat, the moulded top above a plain apron and four turned legs united by stretchers all around. The baluster-turned legs rise from block feet, the whole constructed in pegged mortise-and-tenon joints, characteristic of mid-17th-century joinery. The seat displays a rich surface patina from long use and age.

This form of joined stool represents one of the most recognisable pieces of early oak vernacular furniture in England during the reign of Charles II. Stools of this type were made in large numbers for both domestic and public use, serving as multipurpose seating or small side tables. The present example, with its compact proportions, well-turned legs, and untouched colour, exemplifies the finest provincial joinery of the Restoration period.
