Description

Of baluster form with a short cylindrical neck and single strap handle, this charming tin-glazed earthenware jug is decorated in cobalt blue with freely brushed stylised floral sprays on a white ground. The upper neck is incised with horizontal ridges, while the footrim and rim show characteristic chipping and glaze loss consistent with 17th-century production and use.
The jug typifies the cross-channel exchange between English and Dutch delftware potteries of the mid-17th century. Its pale tin glaze, loose brushwork, and simple cobalt palette are closely related to examples produced in London and Bristol, as well as in the Haarlem and Delft workshops of the same period.

Such vessels were domestic in function—used for ale, cider, or table water—but also decorative, reflecting the growing taste for brightly glazed tablewares inspired by Chinese porcelain imports. The painterly quality of the cobalt ornament, achieved through rapid brushstrokes on the unfired glaze, reveals the influence of contemporary Dutch majolica traditions and their English adaptations.
