Description
A Charles I joined oak side table with silhouette-shaped trestle ends and a two-plank top, joined by a plain stretcher.
The striking silhouette cut-outs to the trestle supports are a distinctive feature of early to mid-17th-century English joinery, where geometric and scrolling profiles were worked into solid boards to create bold, almost sculptural outlines. These shapes, sometimes described as “silhouette balusters,” are more commonly found as the supports of dressers, press cupboards, or larger tables. Their appearance in a small side table of this type is highly unusual and reflects both economy of design and a taste for strong decorative effect within everyday household furnishings.
The table combines structural simplicity with visual drama: the silhouette ends are pierced with broad arching cut-outs, while the stretchers and feet provide stability without detracting from the play of solid and void. Such forms echo the contemporary interest in architectural profiles and heraldic tracery, where negative space was as important as carved ornament.
