Description
A highly decorative and unusually well-preserved two-handled delftware covered pot, painted in vibrant cobalt blue with flowering peonies, chrysanthemums, and songbirds amidst scrolling foliage, all within a dotted border pattern. The domed cover, painted en suite with a large central stylised flowerhead and pierced decoration around the rim, retains its original finial knob and fits neatly to the stepped collar. The twin loop handles, boldly formed, are decorated with painterly blue dashes in the characteristic late 17th-century manner.
The form and decoration place this rare piece at the crossroads between English and Dutch delftware production, when stylistic and technical exchange between London, Bristol, and the major workshops of Haarlem and Delft was intense. The bold blue palette and spirited brushwork suggest influence from Delft painters such as Frederik van Frytom, while the pot’s slightly creamy body and iron-tinged glaze could indicate an English origin, perhaps Southwark or Lambeth, both centres producing vessels of similar type in the last decades of the 17th century.
