Description

A finely executed pair of early 16th-century oak portrait panels, each carved in low relief with a male profile bust enclosed within a laurel wreath, the backgrounds enriched with scrollwork, grotesque masks and classical ornament. One figure wears a close-fitting arming coif; the other a crested Roman-style helmet, both reflecting the humanist fascination with antiquity that defined the Renaissance style in Tudor England.

These would originally have formed part of a panelled chest or wall lining, their classical profiles celebrating ideals of virtue, courage, and learning — values closely associated with the Tudor court of Henry VIII. The delicately modelled faces and elegant framing scrolls show the influence of continental craftsmen working in England during the 1520s–30s, particularly in London and the West Country, where Italianate and Flemish decorative motifs were first adopted.
