Description
A fine blue and white Delftware plate decorated in imitation of Chinese porcelain. The central scene depicts a scholarly arrangement of wares — a tall faceted vase on a stand, smaller vessels, books, flowering plants, and a fish above — all motifs drawn from imported Chinese kraak and transitional porcelains, symbolising prosperity and the cultured life of the literati. The slightly domed centre echoes the form of Chinese dishes, framing the decoration as a pictorial panel. The wide border is painted with scrolling foliage and stylised flowers in rich cobalt blue.
Such scenes of furniture and wares are rare within Delftware production, most surviving plates of this period being decorated with floral or biblical subjects. This example illustrates the Dutch fascination with exotic imports and the translation of Chinese imagery into European taste.
