Description
A remarkable surviving group of four late Gothic oak figures, each carved in the round with traces of original polychrome. These figures, once part of a larger altarpiece ensemble, reflect the devotional richness of Flemish workshops active in the late 15th century.
The first figure is St. Michael the Archangel, shown triumphing over the devil, whose head is crushed beneath his feet.
The second figure, holding a book with a chalice beside him, may represent St. John in his Eucharistic role, or another saint linked to sacramental devotion.
The third figure is clearly St. John the Evangelist, identified by the eagle at his side.
The fourth figure depicts St. Luke the Evangelist, accompanied by his attribute, the winged bull.
Altogether, the set combines angelic victory with the authority of the Evangelists, embodying both the triumph of Christ over evil and the proclamation of the Gospels. Surviving Flemish ensembles of this type are rare, many having been destroyed during waves of iconoclasm in the 16th century.
