Description

A fine and unusual Delftware blue and white charger, measuring 13 ¼ inches in diameter, painted in cobalt blue with scrolling floral sprays arranged within lobed reserves. The central boss is domed, decorated with a stylised tulip and other blossoms enclosed within concentric foliate borders. The wide cavetto is enriched with alternating panels of foliage and abstract motifs, while the rim is painted with cartouches of stylised flowers against a dotted ground.
The domed central section is a notable feature, giving the piece added depth and presence. Typical of late 17th century Dutch Delft, this charger shows strong Chinese Kraak porcelain influence in the division of decorative fields, but with distinctly European floral handling.

The domed central boss is an uncommon feature in Delftware chargers. It served both a practical and decorative purpose — strengthening the form during firing, helping liquids drain towards the cavetto, and providing a raised focal point for the floral motif. The design reflects influences from imported Chinese Kraak porcelain, where similar central bosses were used to enhance both structure and ornament.
