Description

Of elegant pear-shaped form with a slender neck and loop handle, painted in cobalt blue with a continuous oriental garden scene showing flowering peonies, rockwork, and a long-tailed bird perching beside bamboo, all within scrolling foliage. The neck with vertical floral sprays beneath a foliate border, the handle decorated with blue dashes. Tin-glazed throughout on a pale white ground, the foot-rim left unglazed revealing the buff earthenware body.

The delicacy of the cobalt brushwork and the balance of Chinese-style ornament reflect the height of mid-17th-century Delft production, when Dutch potters emulated imported Kangxi-period transitional porcelains from China. The form derives from contemporary silver and porcelain ewers used for wine or water service, and vessels of this refinement were likely intended for a domestic display setting rather than for daily use.
