Description

Each with a square-section upright rising from double scrolled feet and a long rectangular billet bar to the rear; the stem fitted with a series of forged projecting hooks for broaches (spits) and finished at the top with a forged U-shaped fork/cup rest for supporting a spit or pot handle. The elements show hammered faceting, collaring and clenched joints typical of late-Renaissance smith work. Dark, dry patination with traces of old hearth oxidation.

These tall landiers served both as firedogs for burning logs and as adjustable roasting gear—the multiple hooks allowed spits to be set at different heights before the fire, while the forked cup at the summit steadied a long roasting spit. The combination of scrolled feet, square shanks with collars, and multi-hook stems is characteristic of French and Franco-Flemish kitchen hearth iron around 1600.
